I would use for.

Welcome to the forum, Aniko.

As your question concerned I wear a suit in/on important events, that would have made a fine thread title.

I hope you don't teach your students to use multiple exclamation marks when a full stop will do.

Dear Rover,

Of course I don't teach them to use multiple exclamation marks. I only used them to say I really appreciate your help.

Yes I am new here and I don't really know how to use the options here. What do you mean with this:
'As your question concerned I wear a suit in/on important events, that would have made a fine thread title.'
Did I post my question in a wrong place or what?

Thx for your reply.

The title of your post was "Preposition". That is quite vague. Rover meant that it would have been more appropriate to actually make "I wear a suit in/on important events" the thread title as well as the actual post.

When scrolling down a screen of threads, it's much more helpful for us to get a good idea of what the question is so that we can decide whether to open it and read it. Just seeing "Preposition" doesn't give us much to go on.

Thanks.

We encourage the use of correct punctuation and avoid using non-words like Thx.

We like to set examples of correct English for the benefit of the many students who read these answers.

Thank you for the replies. Now I understand everything. Sorry about the problems, but I am new here. That was my first post.

I could see "on" being used in this case. Not "in." "To" is probably best.

I have got a lot of suggestions eg. on, to, at, for.
How can I decide which one is the most appropriate? How do I know whose answer is correct? Maybe ask another teacher? I am just joking.

Dear Rover,

Can I contact you in a private message? I would like to ask something.
I'm not sure if it's possible to send my email address. Am I allowed to do it?

My choices:

I wear a suit to important events (because you go "to" an event, not "on/in" an event.)
I wear a suit at important events (because once you have arrived, you are "at" an event.)

I would only use "on" with "I wear a suit on important occasions."

You can send me a private message. However, you seem to have chosen not to receive PMs.

I will not reply by email - only here in the forum or by private message if you enable them. To do this, click on Quick Links then Edit Options.

A personal, slightly off-topic, note (and note that I am not answering for Rover). I spend some time most days responding to questions in this forum. I enjoy this - that's why I do it. I also have occasional PM conversations with people about all sorts of things - when I have the time. I do not answer questions about English via PM. I am happy to take part in public discussions about usage, but if you want my personal attention - pay for it, buddy.

Dear fivejedjon,

I did not say that I wanted your personal attention. I would like to contact Rover because I like her replies and I need a penfriend to improve my English. Just to talk about anything weather, travel etc. Maybe he could help me or offer somebody. That's why I want to contact and ask HIM.

Once again, I am not answering for Rover.

I am just making a point to all people who visit this forum. We regular responders cannot enter into pen-friend relationships with everybody who would like us to. Even if we had the inclination, most of us don't have the time. Please don't put us in the embarrassing position of having to say no.

This forum is a place for dealing with questions about English. For those who want (pen-) friendship, we have this sub-forum: PenPals

In that case, anikoa, I'm afraid I must decline your invitation to take part in a private conversation - for the reasons outlined by fivejedjon.
Good luck with the PenPals forum.
