    Does "landscape" sometimes mean "situation", a figurative meaning? I can't find the definition in the dictionary.

    ex)Franz Boas came to America in 1886 to pursue his dream of working for the betterment of mankind. However, the American anthropological landscape into which Boas inserted himself was neither vacant, nor without competitors....
