    fumbling

Please set me clear on the following in red.

New habits can be difficult to break, especially as you have to consciously think about the habit in order to avoid doing it. Have you ever tried driving an automatic car for the first time and found yourself fumbling for the clutch and gearstick?

Is this saying "when someone who used to drive a car which is not automatic tries to drive an automatic car for the first time, he or she tends to fumble for the clutch and gearstick by the power of the old habit"? If so, why does the author say "new habits can be difficult to break"?

    Thank you.

I imagine that this is a slip. The writer mixed up the thoughts. 'new habits can be difficult to acquire', and 'old habits can be difficult to break'.
