    not

    Dear teachers,

Not every man is polite, and all are not born gentlemen.

Could you please explain if it means "All of them are not polite" or "Some of them are polite while others are not polite" or "All of them are polite"?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: not

The first half suggests that some people are not polite. The second half appears to suggest that some are not born gentlemen.

    Re: not

I think the second half suggests that no one is born a gentlemen- some become gentlemen, while others fail even to be polite.

    Hi fivejedjon,
Thank you so much for your explanation. The textbook translated the first part as "All the people are polite". So I get totally confused and guess it might be something set.

I don't get how they arrived at that translation without more context- this could be the background to a specific group all being polite, but I share your confusion.
