    only

    Dear teachers,

We ran like the wind and only stoppped when we reached the river.

I think the sentence can be paraphrased as "We did not stop running until we reached the river". But I don't know the meaning of the word "only". I have cosulted the dictionary but there is no meaning that fits in this sentence. Could you please explain the meaning of "only"?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

You're correct about the meaning of the sentence. Collins Dictionary says

    only

    6. not earlier than; not…until I only found out yesterday

    Re: only

The purist might prefer to move 'only' to directly before the expression it relates to:

We ran like the wind and stoppped only when we reached the river.

However, most native speakers would be perfectly happy with your version.
