correct use of the word 'sponsor'

    Hi there,

I would like to check if I have correctly use this word: sponsor.
I have a friend who is doing his bachelor degree with all his expenses being paid by his government. He said, 'I'm sponsored by the government'. Now, another friend of mine said the word sponsor is incorrectly use. What do you think?

Suppose that you're on a trip where your expenses are fully paid, would you say you're sponsored? Or would you just say, the trip is fully-paid for?

    Thanks..

    "Sponsored" seems OK to me.

It depends who's paying- I wouldn't use sponsored if my company was paying.

    Why?
Then under what circumstances would you use the word 'sponsor'?
