What do you think about the tenses I used here?

What do you think about the tenses I used here? Do they sound good?

John receives a letter from Savannah and he gets to know that she wants to marry another man, Tim. This letter winds John up and he burns all Savannah's letters that he had been getting up to that moment.

I'd like to add between he and burns something like, in a particular moment of anger...or something like in anger...Might they sound good? Do you have any particular idioms or expressios I could use in this case to mean that?

This is OK as a commentary on events, but you need to change "had been getting" to "has received" to be consistent.

If you put a comma after "and" you could insert "in a moment of anger" followed by a comma.

This isn't a tense issue, but "and he gets to know" would read more naturally as "and he learns."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
