    branch off

Could you tell me the opposite of this verb in this context?

    - After a while we branched off the highway and I left him where he wanted to be dropped off.

I think in this sentence branch off means to leave a road, but is get into/go into the opposite of this verb? Which verb do I have to use when I begin driving in a different road or street?

If you don't branch/turn off a road, you stay/continue driving on it.

    Re: branch off

    I (re-)joined the main road.
I turned (back) on to the main road.
I got (back) on to the main road.
