    Did the newsreader misspeak?

The anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's death on November 22, 1963, is only days away.

In an apparent impromptu remark, a (young) TV newsreader said, "His death was one of the most important events in the last 100 years."

Do you think that she probably meant "in the last 50 years"?

    THANK YOU

Even if she meant '50 years' it was pretty hyperbolic. She may well have meant '100 years; - it's not a lot sillier.

Assassinations of American presidents don't happen that often. Kennedy's was the only one in the past 100 years. It also serves as an iconic touchstone for people of a certain age. Everyone alive remembers where they were when they got the news (and of course, because of TV everyone saw the images.)

Or at least thinks they do. I 'remember' being told about it at school, but I'm not sure the times match up. (Of course, as it was a catholic school and JFK was the great white (catholic) hope, the news may have been 'managed' in some way.)
