Smile it's turned him to ice

Hi. I don't quite understand the underlined part below.
Does it mean he became cold hearted like an ice man?
    Please help!!! Thank you.

"We had hummus and pitta bread every day at home,"
Samir had said on the beach, when he was remembering all about his life in Iraq,
the life he misses so much it's turned him to ice.

    (Not a Teacher)

If someone's heart is as cold as ice, it means that, for instance, if you were to shoot his pet dog in front of him, he wouldn't even flinch. It could be inferred that he is either a wicked, heartless man or that he is inured to the cruelties life has to offer.
The context you've given seems to imply the latter.

Completely off-topic, but I have to say how pleasant - and surprising - it is these days to see somebody using infer and imply correctly.
