    please explain me

    hello my teacher. there is a test below:
    1)whenever one takes an antibiotic , it is essential that he .......... directions exactly.
    a)following b) follows c) follow d)followed

    the answer is "c" but ı think it must be "b". why? ı could not understand. please explain me why answer b is not correct and why answer c is correct? thanks in advance

    "Follow" is subjunctive. "Follows" is indicative.
    Not many native speakers would use the subjunctive here. I would use "follows". But "follow" is also strictly correct.

    (1) As the VIP Member told you, the "correct" answer is "follow" because that is the

    subjunctive. Here in the United States, we still use the subjunctive more than it is

    used in certain other English-speaking countries.

    I believe that your sentence could be expressed in three "good" ways:

    ... that he follow/ follows/ should follow

    (2) As I said, Americans still prefer the subjunctive:

    It is important that you be here on time tomorrow.

    (3) But in some sentences, it is no longer used:

    If I am right, it is already Wednesday. ("If I be right, ..." is no longer acceptable

    in regular English. You might see it in poetry, etc.)
