    Use of Gone/went

Would you please help define a simple rule for the use of gone and went. I intuitively understand it, but can' explain it. Your help please.

    Go - present
    Went - past
    Gone - past participle

Gone (past participle) uses a helping verb (am, is, are, be, was, were, has, had, have).
    Went stands alone.

    They have gone.
    He had gone.
    She has gone.
    They were gone.
    He was gone.
    They are gone.
    He is gone.
    I should be gone.
    Am I gone?

    I went.
    They went.
    He went.
    She went.
    We went.

    etc.
