the windows on the other side

There were few passengers on the weekend rapid-service train, which went all the way out to the mountains of Takao. Tengo and Fuka-Eri sat next to each other, silently watching the cityscape pass the windows on the other side.
    (H. Murakami; 1Q84)

Does this mean that they were looking out of the windows that were further from them (on the other side of the coach) and not out of those that were closer (on their side)?

    Thanks.

    It seems to say that.
