Hello,
Can anyone help check my answers to these examples?
The question is just:
Combine the following sentences to get only one independent clause.
(1) The campus parking problem is getting worse.
The university is not building any new garages.
Though the campus parking problem is getting worse, the university is not building any new garages.

(2) The US has been overly dependent on foreign oil for many years.
Alternate sources of energy are now only being sought.
While the US has been overly dependent on foreign oil, alternate sources of energy are only now being sought.

(3) Indiana used to be an agriculture state.
It has recently attracted more people.
Since Indiana is used to be an agriculture state, it has recently attracted more people.

(4) The room fell silent.
The TV newscaster has reported the story of the earthquake.
We all stopped what we were doing.
Since the TV newscaster reported the story of the Earthquake, the room fell silent because we all stopped what we were doing.

Thanks to the one who helps me!

You've made a good start! My suggestions are in red.

(1) The campus parking problem is getting worse.
The university is not building any new garages.
Though the campus parking problem is getting worse, the university is still not building any new garages. This one is okay, though I recommend the additional wording. An alternative could be, 'The university is not building any new garages, so the campus parking problem is getting worse.'

(2) The US has been overly dependent on foreign oil for many years.
Alternate sources of energy are now only being sought.
While the US has been overly dependent on foreign oil, alternate sources of energy are only now being sought. Good! You left out the part about "for many years"...

(3) Indiana used to be an agriculture state.
It has recently attracted more people.
Since Indiana [STRIKE]is[/STRIKE] used to be an agriculture state, it has recently attracted more people.
Hard to sort out cause/effect with the given text. Maybe they are looking for 'Indiana used to be an agricultural state, but it has recently attracted more people.'

(4) The room fell silent.
The TV newscaster has reported the story of the earthquake.
We all stopped what we were doing.
Since the TV newscaster reported the story of the Earthquake, the room fell silent because we all stopped what we were doing. 'The room fell silent as the TV newscaster reported the story of the earthquake and we all stopped what we were doing.'

July 2006
(1) Governments pass strict laws against killing tigers.
Governments can help prevent thee extinction of these animals.
As governments pass strict laws against killing tigers, they can help prevent the extinction of these animals.

(2) Leon learned to categorize and draw animals accurately.
Leon studied the biological and natural sciences.
(A) Since Jack studied the biological and natural sciences, he learned to categorize and draw animals accurately.
(B) Jack, who studied the biological and natural sciences, learned to categorize and draw animals accurately.

(3) Columbus is a famous Italian navigator.
He was considered the first European to sale the New World.
(A) Columbus, a famous Italian navigator, was considered the first European to sale the New World.
(B) Columbus, who is a famous Italian navigator, was considered the first European to sale the New World.

Now, what's your opinion about my answers?
