    health plan

Please make the following in red clear for me.

More remarkable, Jobs was running Apple without a paycheck. He agreed to a salary of just $1 a year, enough that his family could take advantage of the health plan.

Is this saying "his family can get the benefit of the health plan if he earns $1 a year"? Maybe I don't understand the system.

    Thank you.

I don't know how the health plan system in the USA works either, but from the piece, it appears that someone simply has to draw a salary, however minimal, in order for them and their family to be allowed to benefit from the health plan.

You simply have to be an employee (not a volunteer).
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: health plan

Do you mean "the health plan" in the original quote refers to Apple's health plan, not the national health plan?

Yes, it refers to a private company health plan.

    NOT A TEACHER

Here in the States, old people such as I have something called Medicare.

It pays 80% of our medical costs.
