    Tedious preoccupation

Hi, is this defines "Tedious" correctly?

From English dictionary & thesaurus, translation from English to Spanish & Turkish and Spanish to English - Cambridge Dictionary Online
    Boring- a tedious job

I see now that I'm not sure with "Preoccupation" ... what does it means in this context?

"To Obama, the ritual parsing of these kinds of statements was a tedious preoccupation of the media, an obsession that few real Americans shared"
