    whereas

Please check out the following sentence. Which option is acceptable?

People in the United States focus first on the left side of a Web site, _____________ Middle Eastern people focus first on the right side.

    ( A. meanwhile B. however C. whereas D. moreover )

My answer is C. whereas. Is it correct? If so, why not use "however?"

    Re: whereas

    I think "wheareas" is right.
    for example
American cars are generally too large for Japanese market, whereas Japanese cars are popular in the US.

    "however"(conj. ) .
    for example
I feel a bit tired. However, I can hold on.

The former is generally used in the middle of sentence, and leads one clause!
The latter is generally used as the "head" of a sentence, leads one independent sentence.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Maybe "however" requires a semicolon. That is:

...the left side of a Web site; however, Middle Eastern people ....
