    "a model citizen in the league"

    Dear all,

    What is the meaning of the expression "a model citizen in the league"?

    Does it mean "he is good in teamwork"?

    I can't get the meaning of "league" here. Also, why the word citizen which, somehow, has a political nature!

    {That's about a basketball player}

    Thanks a lot.

    More context would help.

    You still reading about basketball? The NBA?

    A "model citizen" is someone whom others should emulate. In the case of the NBA it probably means that this player has not been arrested or suspended for smoking dope, has not discharged a weapon in a nightclub and may even be married to the mother of his children.

    A league is a group of sports teams who play each other over a period of time called a season in order to win a championship.

    Citizen has no political overtones.
