    -/the article issues

English articles traditionally pose serious problems for language learners. To makes things worse, there are cases when more than one option is correct either affecting the meaning or not.

What would be your choice in the following context and, more importantly, why:

‘…small retailers just can not compete with …?… huge shopping centres that are being built all over the world…’

    Thanks for your time.

    Re: -/the article issues

…small retailers just can not compete with the huge shopping centres that are being built all over the world…’

The is the definite article and is used to refer to a specific thing, in this case 'huge shopping centres that are being built all over the world'.

It is also worth noting that a is not used before plural nouns, and centres is plural.

    Hope that helps somewhat.
