    never / yet

    Hello,

Can we put in the same sentence "never" and "yet", for example:

I have never seen him yet.
I have never been to Rome yet; however, I hope I will go there next year.

    Thank you for your help

    Re: never / yet

    * Not a teacher

It is possible, but it sounds a little bit unnatural to me. I would say either

    I have never seen him.
I have never been to Rome; however, I hope I will go there next year.

    or

I have not seen him yet.
I have not been to Rome yet; however, I hope I will go there next year.

    Re: never / yet

Maybe instead of "yet", you could use "before".

I have never seen him before.
I have never been to Rome before; however, I hope I will go there next year.

I have never seen him before. This implies that you are seeing him now.
I have never been to Rome before; however, I hope I will go there next year. This doesn't work. The first part implies that you are there now, but the second part contradicts that.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    You're right Barb.
I didn't really think this through. That's embarrasing.
