    Hy,
I tried a test about the Adjectives ending -ful & -less and I find very dificult. When is necessary of but a -full to end and when but -less to end the adjectif?

    I don't undertand this rule.

    Do you help me?

Thank you very much of your help!

Re: Adjectives ending -ful & -less?

They're opposites- if something is useless, it has no use, but if something is useful, it has a use.

Re: Adjectives ending -ful & -less?

Imagine the definition of the word "full" when you try to work them out. If a vase is full of water, there is a lot of water in it. If the bus is full of people, then there are lots of people.

Useful refers to something which has "a lot of uses" or "can be used effectively" so it's a positive thing.

"Less" is a more negative word so is usually used for negative adjectives, like "useless", "brainless".

Note though that the above is not a "rule" that can be applied to any word. Take for example "timeless". This is actually a very positive word. Some of them just have to be learnt.

Can you post some of the questions in the test that you took, along with the answers you gave and we can see if we can see a pattern in your errors?
