Exclamation The colors of a stoplight!!!

    Hello everyone,
Would you please tell me which one is right and more common?

1)The amber light was on when I drove through.
2)The yellow light was on when I drove through.

Or lets say the colors of a stoplight are ( red , yellow and green ) or ( red , amber and green ).

    Thanks in advance,

In North America, the department of motor vehicles uses "amber", but speakers use "yellow".

EX: I drove through the/a yellow light.

In the UK the correct term would be

1)The amber light was on when I drove through.

    You can also simply say:

    "I went through a yellow/amber light."

    "I ran a yellow light."
