    sleetspeak?

ASAPP , HAGD, GTP,.. .I saw the term sleetspeak but told my students they are acronyms. AM I right? Is there a more coloquial, short name for these terms.

    Welcome to the forum, deliful.

Acronyms are abbreviations that can are pronounced as words: NATO. Some have been so commonly used as words, that many people have forgotten that they are acronyms: laser, radar. There is no separate term that I know for abbreviations such as BBC that cannot be pronounced as words. I have never heard of 'sleetspeak'.

    Welcome to the forum, deliful.

    You can call them initialisms.

Acronyms make pronounceable words, like FIFA and NASA.

Enter acronyms in the Google Custom Search box at the top of the page to find links to previous discussions of the topic.

I've learnt a new phrase today as well - initialisms. As the others have said, they're not acronyms.

Where did you hear "sleetspeak"? I could almost understand "streetspeak" or something.

Out of curiosity, what do the four you posted mean? I have guessed that "HAGD" might be "Have a good day" but I can't work out "ASAPP" (instead of ASAP), "GTP" or "ICTs".

    Re: sleetspeak?

Leet/leetspeak exists, but that's different- it's using symbols that look like letters to make words recognisable to (some) humans but not to search engines, so leet could be written as l33t or even 1337:

Three-letter acronym - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I like the term "TLA," though this only works for three-letter ones.
