    miss /miss out

    Dear Teacher,
I am still experiencing difficulties with the above terms. Would it be appropriate to say:

"Students are encouraged to bring a dictionary along with them so that they would not miss /or miss out on the sense of the words"

    2nd question
In other words What is the best way to express the idea that they can follow through without loosing the sense ?

    Re: miss /miss out

miss the meaning of the words
    miss out on the celebrations

Students are encouraged to bring dictionaries with them so that they do not miss the meaning of the words.

Students are encouraged to bring dictionaries with them to look up words they don't know.

    I recommend using "misunderstand".
