    hit a winning return

Can anyone tell mi what's dthe meaning of the highlighted part of the following sentence:

He knew he should fight back. He should just go ahead and sit down on one of the sofas. Just step left or right and sit down. Ignore the guy. Just do it. Just sit down, and show the guy who was boss. Like hitting a winning return or trumping an ace.

    Thank you.

    Re: hit a winning return

It's a metaphor taken from tennis, table tennis, badminton or squash.

The receiver of a serve returns an unplayable shot to win the point.

I presume you understand the other metaphor: trumping an ace?
