    CAUTION: NOT A TEACHER


    (1) If you are speaking about grammar, "concord" is another word for "agreement."

    (a) We especially use this term when referring to subject and verb.

    (i) He sing well.
    (ii) He sings well.

    Which sentence do you think is correct? I am sure that you chose (ii).

    (2) Sometimes we "break" the rules. This is called notional agreement.

    (a) Everybody knows this, don't they?

    (i) The word "everybody" ( every + body) is singular. So the rule requires us to

    say "Everybody knows this, doesn't she/he?" But when we say "everybody," we

    mean "all the people." So we have to "break" the rule.
