    Lightbulb Had been/Was

    Hello, folks.

    What is the difference :
    1. The old village was once surveyed.
    2.The old village had been surveyed.

    #1 tell us that the survey was carried out at some time in the past.

    #2 tells us that the survey was carried ours at some time in the past before a past time known to us. We would normally expect additional information in this sentence, such as 'fifty years before'.
