    spare or changes

My friend said he met a man like a begger saying "Spares or changes" which actually meant asking for money.
But did he mishear "spare changes" as "spares or changes"?
I thought 'spares' as a noun means the same thing as "changes", and when I looked it up in the dictionary, there was no such definition as a noun. What do you think?

    Re: spare or changes

He was asking for "spare change," meaning any coins a person might have in their pocket.
