    While inside the store

New York father charged after his car was stolen with sleeping son, 6, inside - The Middletown Press : Serving Middletown, CT
    Please read this news article.
While inside the store, someone jumped into the car and drove off with the boy asleep in the car.

While inside the store means "While the father was inside the store," doesn't it? Can the father was be omitted?

    Re: While inside the store

To me it doesn't read well. It would be different if it was

Then again, I read the article and it seems fairly clear that the first part of the sentence is referred to the father.

    It should be

'While the father was in the store, someone jumped into his car and drove off with the boy asleep inside it.'

If you knew how small Middletown was, you would not be surprised that its local newspaper was not hiring journalists with impeccable grammatical standards.

When my wife says, "Can you hand me the book over by you?" I resist the urge to say, "Sure, come over here and I will."

But I don't see that as a misplaced modifier. The book is what is "over by you" I assume? So "the book over by you" tells you which book. It's not "me" who is over by you, and the sequence of words wouldn't suggest that.

In contrast, "While inside the store, someone " grammatically means that the "someone" was inside the store.
