    Passive voice

    Hi,

I would like to check should the following sentence use "are" or "were" .
The following sentences are/were extracted from "ABC" document
May I also check when do we use simple past and simple present in passive voice? I have checked on some English learning websites and the examples given for both simple past and present do not really explain which to use. Extracted from 1 of the website:
A letter is written by Rita
A letter was written by Rita

"The following sentences were extracted from "ABC" document."
Where would you use "A letter is written by Rita"?

As always, context would dictate whether "are" or "were" is the correct choice. Both are possible.

    Personally, however, I would use:

The following sentences were taken from ABC document.
The following is an extract from ABC document.
