    help me understand this sentence: one will not approach the paintings on the phlis...

    I study art history and came across this sentence. I'm not entirely sure what the author means. please help!

    " one will not approach the paintings on the philistine level of the illustrated social history, on the look out for illustrations of "a renaissance merchant riding to the market"

    Basically it means "Don't look at the paintings as just illustrations of social history, look at them as art".

    sorry for asking again. I felt.. unsure. here's it's whole context. are you sure that's what he means? because i thought he meant the opposite...

    And there are various destructive uses of pictures which must be avoided. One will not approach the paintings on the philistine level of the illustrated social history, on the look out for illustrations of a "renaissance marchant riding to the market", and so on; nor for that matter through facile equations between "burgess" or "artistocrat" milieux on the one side and "realist" or "idealizing" styles on the other.
