    Talking difficult sentence

    Hi all teachers.
    Please in this sentence
    "a flashlight in
one hand and a large leather-bound book (A History of Magic by
Bathilda Bagshot) propped open against the pillow".
I want to know if propped is an adjective or verb.
    Thank you

    Re: difficult sentence

A verb (used as a participle). Not a sentence.

    Re: difficult sentence

That's what I just said (or to be accurate, in the light of my earlier post, I didn't say it, as I didn't use a finite verb - but it was clear from the context). Is something still not clear?

    Re: difficult sentence

It is describing what has been done to the book. Someone (we don't know who did it - that is, the grammar doesn't tell us, but the context tells us it was probably the reader) propped the book up.

Some other teacher might know more about the rule.
