You can't take money with you.

The other day, I was talking to a native speaker who seemed to be from Austrailia, and he said "You can't take money with you." half as a joke and half seriously to another guy who looked quite frugal and stingy.
In Korea, we have the expression "Will you take the money to the grave? You can't have it when you die"

Which is more common to mean money is vanity if you consider death? "You can't take money with you" or "You can't take money to eternity"?

Re: You can't take money with you.

"You can't take it with you" is the common expression. It can refer to money or any possessions a person might hold dearly.

Re: You can't take money with you.

The idiom is so strong that 'it' is almost always used. 50/60 years ago (if not more) there was a popular song called 'If I can't take it with me when I go/I just ain't gonna go ... I ain't leavin' I know.' The singer understood the 'it', but her avarice (it was Eartha Kitt) made her misinterpret the 'go'.
