    The preposition -on- with transportation

What is the proper using for the proposition "on" with transportation ?

I have found this sentence and it has confused me.

Alan and Susan go to work by bus.

Why do not we say on bus instead.

    Is there any exception.

"by bus" or "on the/a bus" would be OK.
