Hello, great teachers. I have been always thankful to you all here. Today, I would like to ask a question about "what".

"Do you know what she likes?"

Here, how can I analyze the sentence?

"Do you know + the thing that she likes?" Or "Do you know + what does she like?"

In my sense, both are fine and the meaning of the two different ways are the same. What do you think?

Please help me again with your good wisdom. Thanks in advance.

    Re: "What"

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Tom and Susan are eating in a crowded and VERY noisy restaurant.

Tom: I want to buy something for Mona's birthday, but I do not know what (the things that) she likes. You are her

best friend. What (interrogative pronoun) does she like?

Susan (speaking very loudly): I didn't hear you! What did you say?

Tom (almost yelling): Tell me: Do you know what she likes? (indirect question)

Susan: Of course, I know what (the things that) she likes. She likes perfume the most.

Tom: Thanks. I'll buy her some cheap perfume.
