Can you tell me which one these two sentences is correct.

IMO, either can work depending on what you mean. Asking about "the next step" is asking about the single task or action to be taken, following the interview. "The next steps" is asking about the collection of tasks or actions to be taken, following the interview. Of course, you might consider "What are the next steps?" for subject-verb agreement, but I think how 2. is phrased is fine for an in-person discussion.

You might not want to make that kind of question the only thing you ask when you are invited to ask questions in a job interview. Asking questions which are actually about the company are usually welcome.

What are the company's plans for expansion?
Do you support the local community?

I was certainly advised to steer clear of questions like:

How much holiday do I get?
When will I get my first pay rise? ;-)
