A: Do you understand?
1. I do.
2. I get it.
3. I got it.

I heard some people say : I get it or I got it. Which one is natural? Why do we use the past tense? We usually say " I see " but not "I saw".

Could anyone help, please?

1 is a little formal, 2 & 3 are very common as "to understand" is one of the many meanings of "to get". I don't quite understand where "I got it" comes from – maybe it's a deletion of have from the perfect aspect ("I've got it"). 3 works, but it's quite informal.

To the question "Do you understand?" I would answer "Yes, I do". "I get it" is very informal, and "I got it" is wrong IMO .
