Could you tell me a synonym for the word 'fell' in the given sentence?

    Hi teachers,
Could you tell me a synonym for the word
    'fell' in the sentence below.
As they came to the end of their meal, they
fell silent and looked at one another.

    Thanks in advance.

    Became
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Passed into a state of silence.
    Silent is an adjective.
A state requires a noun: silence.

I think became silent is more frequently used than your second suggestion.
Maybe turned silent could be an option.
