    present perfect

    Hello, is this sentence correct?

My apologies for the delay in responding to your letter as I returned to the office today. I have been away on holidays.

Do you really need to explain that you've been away on holiday?

Many apologies for the delay in responding to your letter.

If you want to elaborate a little you could put "Many apologies for the delay in responding to your letter. I have just returned to the office.
