I got into a bit of a random discussion with a friend of mine the other day regarding whether land or a place takes on the present tense attribute of events that have occurred there. As you might be able to understand from how confusing that sentence is, it was difficult to search for an answer. It is probably best if I give two examples so you can actually understand my question. Which of these sentences would be correct or better, presuming the sentence is spoken in 2012 while someone is talking about why Torrey Pines is a great golf course in 2012:
"Torrey Pines is the host of the 2008 U.S. Open."
"Torrey Pines hosted the 2008 U.S. Open."
Thanks for any guidance you might be able to provide!
