    cuts into your day.

    Jim is cooking for a party tonight, and Mel is asking the progress.
    What does "cut into something" mean? The translation goes "something can make you have a hard time", but I'm not sure of it.

    Jim- All right! Everything's in. Salad's almost done.
    Mel- How did this happen?
    Jim- You mean this insane mad dash at the last minute? That's the problem with having a dinner party on a week night.
    Mel- It is amazing how much work really cuts into your day. But you know what, this kind of chaos is exactly what Holly thrived on.

    It means that it reduces the time you have left to do things that matter to you.
