Dear teachers

I am confused with the usage between "rent" and "rental". Say, should I say the rental is rising, or the rent is rising?

Look forward to hearing from you

The most natural for me would be:

The rent is rising.
The rental price/cost is rising.

That's because I generally treat "rental" as an adjective. However, it is also a noun which simply means the amount of money received as rent, so I guess you can say "The rental is rising". To me, though, that sounds wrong.

^ I agree with this 100%. I don't think we use "rental" as a noun meaning "the amount of money received as rent" in BrE very much at all.

We do refer to things like "line rental" and "car rental" though.

"Rental" isn't used like that in AmE.

It is used as an adjective, like "rental car."
