in class / in the class

Between 'in class' and 'in the class', which means actual classroom and which means a lesson?

Also how do we put when we refer to 'students'? - class? the class?

    Thank you.

Re: in class / in the class

I know for a fact that when you refer to students you say the class:

Tell the class to brainstorm on the subject.

Also how do we put when we refer to 'students'? - class? the class? It depends, as is frequently the case, on context within which "students" is referenced. "Alright class, let's begin our lesson" (No article when addressing the students). "I had difficulty getting the attention of the class this morning" (With an article when referring to a specific group of students).

    Thank you.
