    Re: peasnt and farmer

A peasant is a poor farmer of low social status who owns or rents a small piece of land for cultivation (chiefly in historical use or with reference to subsistence farming in poorer countries).
    • used informally, the word means "an ignorant, rude, or unsophisticated person; a person of low social status."

A farmer is a person who owns or manages a farm.

    Re: peasnt and farmer

In the US, peasant is no longer used. Any person who owns or rents land or facilities for the purposes of husbandry is a farmer. It might seem logical to limit the term to a person who operates a farm which connotes a parcel of land, but even someone who only rents buildings to raise animals in confinement is called a pig farmer, chicken farmer, etc.
