    Complex Sentence

I am a bit confuse with the use of punctuation when writing complex sentences. For example,
    1. The woman, whom we met at the concert, is looking for you.
    2. The place, where we used to play, is now a block of flats.
    3. The house, which his father bought, is big.
    Are those ',' necessary?

Besides, there are 2 simple sentences as below:
    1. The monkey pointed at some toy bananas.
    2. It thought they were real bananas.
I would like to combine them into a complex sentence, is this how it should be?
The monkey pointed at some toy bananas, which it thought they were real bananas.

    Thanks for the help.

IMO, no. (By the way, they're called commas.) The woman, the place, the house are all non-specific, so actually they belong with their modifiers:
    1. The woman we met at the concert is looking for you.
    2. The place where we used to play is now a block of flats.
    3. The house his father bought is big.

    OR:
    1. Betty Jones, whom we met at the concert, is looking for you.
    2. Central Park, where we used to play, is now a block of flats.
    3. Epworth House, which his father bought, is big.

Lose the they.
