Does the sentence imply that the cat has been found?

If you found my cat, please let me know.

Does the sentence imply that the cat has been found? I don't think so. I believe it suggests that the owner has not much confidence that his/her cat can be found. Please let me know if I am correct.

    Thanks.

You are right- the speaker assumes the cat has not been found, though it does seem to imply that the listener has been looking for the cat. This makes the sentence a bit strange. Why would someone look for the cat, possibly find it, and then need your instruction to let you know that they found it? 'Oh yes, I found your cat but I didn't realize you would want me to tell you I found it.' This is absurd.

'If you find my cat, please let me know' is more neutral on the assumption of a search and, I think, more common. The listener may or may not have been looking for the cat- probably not. This sentence may be used as a way to tell someone that your cat is missing.

'My cat is missing. If you find him, please let me know.' OR 'Hey, if you see my cat, let me know. He's missing.'
