Hello, Teacher, are both sentence correct? In (2), can I say "are in October..."?

1) I called Dr. John's office to book an appointment and his secretary informed me that his next earliest dates for booking an appointment were in October of this year.

2) I called Dr. John's office to book an appointment and his secretary informed me that his next earliest dates for booking an appointment are in October of this year.
