    the use of should

    In the following sentence pattern, it's quite natural to say that It's surprising that he should have an accident.
    Then can I say in this way: To my surprise, he should have an accident.
    Is this sentence acceptable? Or is it better to say: To my surprise, he had an accident? Looking forward to your help.
