    Which words should I use?

John loved to speed on this motorcycle. His friends always discouraged him from doing so. One day, as usual, he was speeding when he saw a patch of oil on the road ahead. He tried to brake to avoid it. However, he could not brake in time and his bike skidded as it went over the oil.

When he came to, he realised that he was in hospital.

From this/that incident, John realised that speeding is / was dangerous. Now he rides carefully.

Should I use 'this' or 'that'? And should it be 'is' or 'was'?

    Thanks.

I would use "that" and "is".
