    To hinder&to thwart

    As far as I look up they seem the same to me, but in the dictionary they are not mentioned as synonims. What difference(s) would be the reason that they are not synonims?

    I think of "thwart" as being a volitional thing. Someone or something sets out to thwart you.

    More importantly, 'thwarting' is more final and successful. You can be [from] more [to] less* in you efforts to hinder someone or something. Until you succeed in your efforts to hinder them, you haven't thwarted them.

    *I used this roundabout way of saying 'more or less' to avoid any confusion with the other meaning of 'more or less'.
